The perfect campervan destination, Tasmania has come a long way over the last 10 years. Once the butt of all jokes for all mainland Australians, Tasmania has become one the most popular tourist destinations in Australia.
With an abundance of nature and a genuine appreciation for it’s heritage, Tasmania is an instagrammers wet dream. Hobart and even Launceston have embraced their boutique cultures and there’s now thriving local scene for young and old alike.
Ol’ Bob spent some time in Launceston in the early 90’s, touring with classic British grunge-4-piece ‘Life Haters’. It was during this time that he discovered the wonders of the echidna – a small, spiky little marsupial that likes to commit suicide on Tasmanian roads. The echidna fascinated Bob with it’s long pointy nose, punk-rock haircut and complete disregard for its own safety. It was the perfect mascot for the 90’s grunge scene.
If you’re looking to explore Tasmania, most campervan hire places are based in Hobart – and to be honest, there’s not a lot of choice. Wicked Campers have a fairly large fleet based in Hobart and a few smaller independent motorhome hire places are located near the airport, including Rouge Rentals.
Tasmania’s best bits – definitely the east coast, including Wineglass Bay and the Bay of Fires, with it’s crystal-clear water and pure white sandy beaches. Then there’s the rural, isolated west coast and the ideallic Cradle Mountain. Davenport is worth a visit as is Launceston – in fact, Launceston has some of the best old pubs in Australia.
